Liz Cassidy-Canning
Whakaora Kai
Liz Cassidy-Canning is the CEO of 155 Whare Āwhina and director of Whakaora Kai Limited, a food rescue initiative with a vision of zero waste, zero hunger. With sites in Whangārei, Moerewa (in partnership with He Iwi Kotahi), and Kaikohe, Whakaora Kai collects surplus food from local businesses and redistributes it to over 80 community groups and marae across Taitokerau. Liz, who facilitated the creation of Whakaora Kai, combines her leadership role with hands-on work as a relief food rescue driver. A passionate advocate for equity, justice, and systemic change in food security, she also brings extensive experience in governance and the health and social service sectors. Proud mother of four and nana to three mokopuna, Liz is committed to AFRA’s mission to reduce food waste, cut carbon emissions, and ensure that no one in Aotearoa goes hungry.

Dr Jordi Hoult
AFRA Board Member
Jordi’s work has always been grounded in kaitiakitanga and he tāngata (the people) – from her earliest days as a vet through to leading national initiatives connecting biodiversity, agriculture, and food systems. Currently at the Department of Conservation, her work includes innovative approaches linking wild animal management to meat recovery. Her previous roles at the Ministry for Primary Industries included championing microabattoirs, supporting food resilience during Cyclone Gabrielle and the cost-of-living crisis, and building government engagement with all corners of the food sector.
Food rescue is personal for Jordi. She’s driven by a simple belief: in a country that produces so much food, no one should go hungry. She’s drawn to AFRA because it embodies what she knows to be true – that locally-led solutions create change that compounds. From Northland to Southland and paddock to parliament, Jordi builds trust across communities with vastly different values, bringing a growth mindset that asks “What if?”, “Why not?” and “How?” to the challenge of turning environmental problems into social solutions.
Based in the Manawatū with her husband and two chaotic cats, Jordi is a 2024 Kellogg Rural Leadership Programme Scholar and holds strategic and advisory roles across the food and fibre sector. Outside of work, she finds joy in paddleboarding, ocean swimming, cultivating an orchard that produces an abundance of lemons, and making terrific cakes and terrible puns.

Susie Robertson
Kaibosh Food Rescue
Susie Robertson is the Kaiarahi/CE of Kaibosh Food Rescue, which has three branches across the Greater Wellington region. Susie has a long working history in the charity sector, with a background in youth health and development and social marketing. Her passion is working with the community for the good of people and the planet. When she isn’t working, she loves getting into the bush with her family and dog. Susie believes in freely sharing knowledge and resources, and so is deeply supportive of the AFRA alliance model, and the benefits it can have for all its members. She is also the co-chair and an independent member on the board of Environment Hubs Aotearoa, another nationwide membership organisation.

Stef Van Meer
Satisfy Food Rescue
Stef Van Meer is Manager of Satisfy Food Rescue, a food rescue charity serving North Canterbury and Christchurch. She has been an integral part of developing and growing Satisfy’s brand, strategic direction and organisational culture over the past 7 years to become what it is today. Stef’s short but enjoyable time on the AFRA board this year has been a valuable experience in learning more about governance on a national scale.

Joel Williams
The Salvation Army (Te Ope Whakaora)
Joel Williams is the Regional Kai Champion and Foodbank Team Leader for The Salvation Army in Tāmaki Makaurau, overseeing the distribution of nearly 15 tonnes monthly to communities across Auckland. Operating from the organisation’s largest foodbank in Manukau, which serves over 200 families per week through a choice-model pantry, Joel has deep operational experience in both direct client service and large-scale logistics.
A former chef of 20 years, he brings a unique understanding of food systems from both the creation and rescue perspectives. This practical expertise was pivotal in his role on the steering committee that redeveloped The Salvation Army’s national food security framework, where he was also responsible for developing its national food safety guidelines.
Joel is a passionate advocate for systemic change and believes that a Tiriti-honouring approach is essential to achieving equitable food security for all in Aotearoa. He is on a continuous journey of learning and immersion in Te Ao Māori, regularly leading mihi whakatau in his community role. He brings governance experience from his positions as a sitting chairperson for a housing body corporate and a former treasurer.
He is driven by the core belief that access to nutritious kai is a fundamental right, and that AFRA’s work is vital in building a more equitable and waste-free Aotearoa for all.
